I am trying to lunge my horse for the first time.?

I have a gelded 8 year old quarter horse/ arab that I am trying to lunge. I find he will not go in front of me instead he wants to follow me only. How can I get him to lunge properly without spooking him. I am worried if I spook him he will take off and get caught up in the lunge line and injure himself.
